When can heuristics in healthcare become a problem?

The term "by the book" implies that there is one correct way to accomplish a task, whether that be replacing an air filter or preparing your taxes. You might think the same standard applies to healthcare, and in many situations, it does. There are generally accepted standards of care in each clinical field that help to guide the clinicians delivering care to you and other Carnegie residents. Unfortunately, your body is somewhat more complex than a car or a tax form, and thus healthcare providers are also relied upon to think on their feet when the situation calls for it. The question then becomes are they willing to do so?

Should teens turn off the radio when driving?

It is something that you probably do all the time: listening to music when you drive on Pennsylvania roads. It is so natural and normal that every vehicle comes from the factory with a stereo built in. As you drive, you may not even give a second thought to the radio. Sometimes, you may flip through the channels or change the song. You may lower or raise the volume. In general, though, you do not give the radio much thought. However, have you considered how the radio may impact a new driver?

What are fuel loads and what can I do about them?

A fuel load is anything that can catch fire and fuel an existing inferno. If fuel loads are allowed to exist, they can help a fire spread, cut off existing lines of escape and produce dangerous fumes that may cause a person to succumb and die.

Pennsylvania woman sues manufacturer of faulty implant

A 60-year-old woman in Pennsylvania claims that both she and her husband sustained injuries due to a faulty vaginal mesh implant she received in 2007. The product's manufacturer reportedly ignored warnings that it could cause pain and injury and put the product on the market in 2005 without approval from the Food and Drug Administration. The woman is now suing the pharmaceutical company for knowingly releasing a faulty product.

What duty of care do you owe to visitors?

Yet just how far does that responsbilty extend? The answer to that question depends largely on what type visitor a person found on your land is determined to be. While you (and one who is is injured while on your property) may not currenlty understand such formalities, they may go a long way in protecting you in the event if a liability claim.

Reduced acceptance of autonomous vehicles

Most people in Pennsylvania are likely to agree that the ability to improve safety on the road would be something they are interested in. However, just what form that improved safety comes in may not be something that just anyone is actually interested in or willing to embrace. Autonomous vehicles are one innovation that has been touted to have the ability to reduce accidents, thereby improving safety yet it seems that most consumers are not ready to hand over control of their vehicles just yet.

When you are prescribed a medication by a doctor in Pennsylvania, you probably trust that the medication will help you and not cause you further harm. It is in the nature of our government that drugs are carefully screened before you can get your hands on them. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is responsible for this drug screening and approval process.
